Designations
The following are the three accounting designations available in Ontario:
Chartered Accountants (CA)
Chartered Accountants must meet the highest standards of financial expertise, strategic thinking, business insight and leadership. The CA profession’s commitment to excellence and the public interest provides the crucial foundation for this trust. In fact, Canadian CAs are recognized around the world for high professional standards and expertise.
Ontario CAs work in public practice, businesses of every size, education, government and the not-for-profit sector, and serve every facet of society. They contribute greatly to international and domestic investor confidence in the soundness of the Ontario and Canadian economies.
Certified Management Accountants (CMA)
Certified Management Accountants do more than just measure value, they create it. Of CMA Canada’s 47,000 members across Canada and around the world, 20,000 members call Ontario home.
Certified Management Accountants (CMAs) are strategic and financial management professionals who combine accounting expertise with professional management skills to provide leadership, innovation, and an integrating perspective to organizational decision-making. CMAs use their strategic focus to position an organization for success, their management skills to lead its growth, and their accounting skills to track its progress. They add value to business by developing total business solutions, identifying new market opportunities, and protecting/maximizing shareholder value.
Certified General Accountants (CGA)
Certified general accountants are trained in the full spectrum of accounting. Broadly and deeply competent, CGAs have the education and training required to fulfil advanced business and financial functions. CGAs are thoroughly equipped to address the ever-changing needs of business of every size and in every sector, as well as the needs of individual clients.
Certified general accountants occupy key financial positions in business, industry, education and government. Additionally, as partners and owners of their own firms, many CGAs offer accounting and financial services to the public.
